The Mass of St. Gregory 1550-60 Spanish, Castilian Late medieval imagists formulated a vision popularly ascribed to Gregory the Great, in which Christ as the Man of Sorrows appears on the altar and shows his wounds to the pontiff as he elevates the host during Mass. The theme, often invoked to demonstrate the truth of substantiation, was later discredited and virtually disappeared by the seventeenth century. The format and leftward movement of this relief suggest that it came from the right-hand predella of a multipaneled retablo, the characteristic form of a Spanish altarpiece. The carving is by an uncommonly gifted member of the Castilian school. Although he was touched by the lessons of the great master sculptors Alonso Berruguete (1488-1561) and Juan de Juni (about 1507-1577), he shows his own flair for narrative and an independent physiognomical manner, as in the broad skulls of the celebrant and assisting clergy. The plaques, originally carved in Egypt one hundred years earlier, depict on their backs a tree flanked by birds and Hercules capturing the Golden Stag of Artemis. Diptych with Scenes from the Passion 15th century French This diminutive ivory diptych represents two scenes leading to the Passion of the Christs, the washing of the feet of the Apostles and the Agony in the Garden. This iconography is unusual for ivory diptychs of 14th and 15th century northern Europe, which when adorned with a single scene normally represent the Epiphany, Passion, and the Virgin and Child. This unusual iconography, the irregular frame, and small dimensions suggest that the diptych is composed of fragments of a larger ivory plaque that represented scenes from the Passion. It is likely that such a plaque was sawn into pieces and reassembled sometime after its creation, perhaps by a later owner seeking to salvage elements after damage.. Bloc of the monument called "to the arms of March". Limestone. Gallo-Roman time, high-Empire. Paris, Carnavalet museum. One of the faces is decorated with a pattern of nested leaves. This decor has been removed, perhaps later, to represent a tricephale character dressed in a belted tunic and a coat; He carries a head of ram in his left hand and, in the right, an object identified as a scholarship. These elements made it possible to recognize an iconographic type linked to the Mercury God. The other face includes the representation of an almost naked young child, playing with an egrette head too large for him. TheLamentation, ca.1470, Wood, 122.56 × 183.2 × 34.29 cm (48 1/4 × 72 1/8 × 13 1/2in.), Little is known about this interesting object carved from wood and originally painted with various colors making it seem more realistic. Based upon the mixture of Italian Renaissance influence and International Gothic style, the piece is thought to be Northern Italian (or perhaps even Austrian) from the latter half of the fifteenth century.
