Manuscript Illumination with the Evangelist Luke. Culture: Byzantine. Dimensions: 5 13/16 x 4 1/16 in. (14.7 x 10.3 cm). Date: late 13th-early 14th century. On a single page from a gospel book, the illumination shows the evangelist Luke seated on a backless chair, reaching with his left arm toward the open book on a pedestal before him. He wears a loose-fitting blue tunic and white himation, and sandals on his feet. He holds a quill pen in his right hand as he pauses to contemplate the text. His sandaled feet rest on a footstool, next to a small book cabinet that extends beyond the border of the illumination. Careful study of the cabinet reveals the artist's attention to detail, for there neatly arranged are all of Luke's writing implements, including his inkwell and a knife for sharpening his quills. The sparse furnishings in the scene--pedestal, chair, footstool, and cabinet--are all carefully painted in tan and oak shades with white highlighting and texturing. A gold ground provides

Commentary on the Apocalypse (Commentaria In Apocalypsin) was originally an eighth century work by the Spanish monk and theologian Beatus of Liebana. Today, it refers to any of the extant manuscript copies of this work, especially any of the 26 illuminated copies that have survived. It is often referred to simply as the Beatus. The historical significance of the Commentary is made even more pronounced since it included a world map, which offers a rare insight into the geographical understanding of the post-Roman world. Well-known copies include the Morgan, the Saint-Sever, the Gerona, the Osma and the Madrid (Vitr 14-1) Beatus codices. Considered together, the Beatus codices are among the most important Spanish medieval manuscripts and have been the subject of extensive scholarly and antiquarian enquiry.

Pachacuti, Tenth Inca, 1 of 14 Portraits of Inca Kings Unknown. Pachacuti, Tenth Inca, 1 of 14 Portraits of Inca Kings, mid-18th century (probably). Oil on canvas, 23 9/16 x 21 9/16in. (59.8 x 54.8cm). Although indigenous people ranked below Spaniards in Spanish Americas social order, direct descendants of pre-Hispanic nobility were afforded certain political privileges, including the right to hold office in local government. In order to legitimize claims to noble lineage in the viceroyalty of Peru, members of the Inca elite often conspicuously displayed in their homes Europeanized portraits of their ancestors, the fourteen ancient Andean rulers. The Inca had no pictorial portraiture tradition before the conquest. Soon after European contact, however, series of Inca kings painted by local artists in European portrait styles started to appear in indigenous and Creole inventories. This bust-length portrait series is based on a 1615 Spanish engraving (see illustration). Aunque los indíg
