Angkor Wat was built for King Suryavarman II (ruled 1113-50) in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the Angkor site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation - first Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist. It is the world's largest religious building. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors. Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple mountain and the later galleried temple, based on early South Indian Hindu architecture. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers.

The Jin dynasty, distinguished as the Sima Jin and Liang Jin, was a Chinese dynasty, empire, and era traditionally dated from 265 to 420 CE. It was founded by Sima Yan, son of Sima Zhao who was made Prince of Jin and posthumously declared the founder of the dynasty. The Western Wei followed the disintegration of the Northern Wei, and ruled northern China from 535 to 557 CE. As with the Northern Wei state that preceded it, the ruling family of Western Wei were members of the Tuoba clan of the Xianbei.

The Combat of Rama and Ravana late 18th century India, Coromandel Coast This rare example of a ceremonial textile hanging depicts the penultimate battle in the Ramayana, when Rama and his monkey and bear armies fight Ravana and his hoards of demons. Rama and Ravana are preparing to discharge magical arrows at each other. Rama is supported by Lakshmana, seen stringing his bow, and by his general, the monkey leader Hanuman, who gestures in veneration (anjali) to his Lord. Some members of Hanuman's army engage in deadly combat while others carry rocks to build the land bridge to Lanka (Sri Lanka), needed for the final siege of Ravana's fortress and the rescue of Rama's wife, Sita. Ravana is flanked by his general and by the demonic creatures in his service. The surrounding battleground is filled with combatants and the dismembered bodies of the slain. This vivid and masterful example of south Indian textile painting, kalamkari, demonstrates the artist's ability to capture in lively brushw

The Liao Dynasty, also known as the Khitan Empire, was a state that ruled over the regions of Manchuria, Mongolia, and parts of northern China proper. It was founded by the Yelü clan of the Khitan people in the same year as the Tang Dynasty collapsed (907), even though its first ruler, Yelü Abaoji (Yaruud Ambagai Khan), did not declare an era name until 916. Although it was originally known as the Empire of the Khitan, the Emperor Yelü Ruan officially adopted the name 'Liao' (formally Great Liao’) in 947. Another name for China in English, Cathay, is derived from the name Khitan. This is also the origin of the Russian word for China, Китай or Kitay, and that of several other East European languages. The Liao Empire was destroyed by the Jurchen of the Jin Dynasty in 1125. However, remnants of its people led by Yelü Dashi established the Xi (Western) Liao Dynasty 1125-1220, also known as Kara-Khitan Khanate, which extended its influence over Central Asia into Persia and survived until t

Painted Textile Depicting Celestial Musicians 16th-17th century India (Gujarat) This spectacular painted textile (kalamkari), more than eighteen feet long, was produced exclusively, it would seem on current evidence, for export to island Southeast Asia. To date, all examples have been found in Indonesia. Jain pictorial cloths of this type are not recorded in India, but they probably began their existence serving Jain temples as hangings displayed during the celebration of Paryushana and other festivals. In such contexts they would have been intended to depict the heavenly entertainers (apsaras), who perform in Indra's heaven, where the jinas reside. In the installation of icon ceremonies, these ensembles are identified as the dikkumari, celestial maids who attend Mahavira's birth. The conventions that characterize medieval Jain painting are well preserved here, suggesting shared skills across the painting ateliers and kalamkari workshops of Ahmedabad and Cambay, the centers of Gujarat's

According to Egyptian legend, the king of Nubia (present-day Sudan) overheard three Ethiopians talking, one saying that he could take the pharaoh to Nubia and there have him thrashed. The king then asked that one to do so. When the king was thrashed and then returned, he summoned his chief magician so that he could prevent more sorcery. The magician went to the temple and prayed to Thoth, the god of wisdom and writing. Thoth appeared to the magician ( ) and gave him the magic spells to avoid further evil against the pharaoh and the Egyptians.

Plaque with the Symbol of the Evangelist Luke ca. 1100 French This plaque, part of an ensemble including four plaques with the symbols of the evangelists and a central roundel with the crucifixion, probably from a book cover, can be securely attributed to the celebrated pilgrimage abbey of Saint Foy at Conques, France's richest surviving repository of medieval goldsmith's work. Several of the rare works dispersed from the abbey's treasury in the nineteenth century share with others still in situ a technique, style, and palette uniquely combined during the abbacy of Bégon III in the late eleventh century. For these pieces the monk goldsmiths employed superimposed copper plaques, the lower one to receive the delicate cloisons that define features and drapery, the upper one cut to delineate the silhouettes of the figures and the cross. Hallmarks of the style include the single cloison used to define eyebrows and noses and the thin loop of gold that creates cowlicks. In the Metropolitan's
