Reliquary Bust of Saint Barbara ca. 1465 Workshop of Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden North Netherlandish This bust, and its companion (acc. no. 17.190.1734), reflect the liveliness and innovative naturalistm of sculpture carved in Nikolaus Gerhaerts workshop when he was working in the Upper Rhine region. Saint Catherine, whose relics were once located in the chest cavity, can be identified by her attributes the sword and the wheel. The bust of Saint Barbara also contained relics. She is recognized by the tower she holds in her right hand. It is likely that the busts were originally set into niches in the altarpiece at the high altar in Wissembourg. In addition to the saints seen here the altarpiece also incorporated busts of Saint Margaret (now in the Art Institute of Chicago) and Saint Agnes (unlocated). Plaster casts of all four busts are preserved in the Musée de lOeuvre Notre-Dame in Strasbourg.. Reliquary Bust of Saint Barbara. Workshop of Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden (North Netherla

Tomb Effigy Bust of Marie de France (1327-41), daughter of Charles IV of France and Jeanne d'Evreux. Artist: Jean de Liège (Franco-Netherlandish, active ca. 1361-died 1381). Culture: French. Dimensions: Overall (without base): 12 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 6 3/16 in. (31.1 x 32.4 x 15.7 cm). Date: ca. 1381.The Royal Abbey of Saint-Denis was the burial church for the rulers of France and their families. This elegant image once formed a part of the tomb effigy of the princess Marie de France (1326-1341) and her sister Blanche de France (1328-1393), daughters of Charles IV (1294-1328) and Jeanne d'Evreux (before 1313-1371). Although Marie died young, her effigy was not carved until about 1381 by the court sculptor Jean de Liège. The image here of the tomb is from a drawing made before 1715. Many of the tombs in the abbey were vandalized in the wake of the French Revolution. Originally the head rested upon a stone pillow, and the princess wore a metal crown. Her braided hair is arranged in the courtl

Virgin and Child, Antonio Rizzo, c. 1465 - c. 1470 Around relief with Mary standing behind a plinth, on which the child stands Jesus, presented by her to the viewer by the gesture of her right hand. Jesus holds his mother's left hand and makes a blessing gesture with his right arm and hand, which qualifies him as a salvator. In the background an angel comes floating on a cloud; The rest of the background consists of horizontal, stripe -shaped cloud formations. The whole is framed by an inner edge of wide beads, always alternated by two flat, standing beads; Around a Frisian of connected palmets. The rear surface runs slightly downwards within this frame, resulting in a reinforced perspective effect of the Tondo. At the rear, the Tondo is going with a concave profile and a bead list. The side is rough, the rear sawn flat. Escutcheon Plate of a Shaffron (Horse's Head Defense) ca. 1530-40 German, probably Augsburg Escutcheon plates probably developed from early reinforces but were later employed primarily for the display of dynastic arms or personal imprese. Occasionally they also incorporated more fanciful motifs of purely decorative type such as this highly original and rare example of anthropomorphic shape and classical decoration. While the motif of a mooress holding a shield reflects the European fascination with "exotic" races, the scene on the shield represents Hercules battling the river god Acheloüs in the guise of a bull. One of his horns, broken off during the fight, was later given to the Goddess of Plenty, the cornucopia henceforth becoming her symbol (two such cornucopiae are embossed above the figure of Hercules).. Amor Caritas Modeled 1897 United States. This angelic figure by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a foremost sculptor of the Gilded Age, is the culmination of his portrayals of allegorical women. He made similar designs for the tomb of Edwin D. Morgan in Hartford, Connecticut, and the mantelpiece in the house of Cornelius Vanderbilt II in New York. Like many other late 19th-century artists, Saint-Gaudens often modeled angels to symbolize the traditional virtues of women. Amor Caritas (Love and Charity) probably depicts Davida Clark, the artistís mistress. Saint-Gaudens brought a level of naturalism to his ideal figure, particularizing the facial features and rendering the drapery so that it suggests the human form beneath.. Bronze . Mary Justina de Peyster late 1880s George Edwin Bissell American Bissell was commissioned to execute this bust of Mary Justina de Peyster (1802-1821) by her son, John Watts de Peyster. One of many portraits that Bissell undertook for the de Peyster family, it appears to be the only extant likeness of a female family member that the sculptor completed. Bissell apparently carved the marble about 1887 and seems to have had a painted portrait of the long-deceased sitter at his disposal for reference. Bissells marble wavers between extremes of rigid neoclassicism and Beaux-Arts naturalism. He clearly delighted in such details as the aquiline nose, beaded hair comb, and corsage of blossoms. The surface is enlivened by the sweeping scrollwork on the rococo-revival cartouche and the curve of the shoulder termination.. Mary Justina de Peyster 10169
