The people gathered in the court below urge his execution, with pointed fingers raised in accusatory gestures. On the loggia before the assembled crowd, Pilate—convinced of Jesus’ innocence and impressed by his dignity, according to Tissot’s account—publicly washes his hands on the loggia before the square, symbolically distancing himself from the execution to follow. Laguillermie, from Georges Duplessis's "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), Paris 1867. The book was a continuation of the series on the costumes of the 12th to 15th centuries published by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri from 1830. Georges Duplessis (1834-1899) was curator of the Prints department at the Bibliotheque nationale. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard (1825-1902) was an artist, book illustrator, and interior designer for many public buildings and churches. He was named professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1874.

The figures represented here are French around A.D. 1100: queen, king, costume of the people, three knights.

'The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry Is a French Gothic illuminated manuscript. The Très Riches Heures is a prayer book created for John, Duke of Berry, by the Limbourg brothers between 1412 and 1416. The book was completed by Jean Colombe between 1485 and 1489. The manuscript is held at the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France. this folio (May)shows a May 1st cavalcade going into the forest to look for branches. It could be the Palais de la Cité in Paris Chtelet left the Conciergerie and the Clock Tower.'

Jesus Leaves the Praetorium (Jésus quitte le pretoire) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). Jesus Leaves the Praetorium (Jésus quitte le pretoire), 1886-1894. Following his presentation to the crowds from the loggia, Jesus is taken from Pilates palace—at half past eleven in the morning, Tissot precisely notes—to the public square where he will be officially condemned to death. Made a figure of mockery, Jesus is forced to wear the crown of thorns as well as the short scarlet cloak and carries a reed, meant to evoke a royal scepter. Focusing on the injuries suffered by Jesus, Tissot also notes that, at every step, the woolen cloak would have either rubbed his wounds or stuck to them. Although Tissots images are ordinarily opaquely, or thickly, painted and filled with a multitude of minute details, here he varies his technique noticeably in the rendering of the backlit figures at the top of the

Horatius Cocles Defending the Sublician Bridge, Florence, c 1550, tempera on panel. Pieces of Italian furniture, especially chests (Cassoni), were often decorated with scenes from legends and Classical antiquity. Although Cassoni were painted by some of the most important artists, the majority were produced by anonymous decorative painters. This panel, from one such Cassoni, depicts the Roman general Horatius Cocles defending the bridge to Rome against the Etruscans.

The Bedford Master was an manuscript illuminator active in Paris during the fifteenth century. He is named for the work he did on two books illustrated for John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford between 1415 and 1435. One is the Bedford Hours, a Book of Hours, in the British Library; the other, a breviary, is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Noah (or Noe, Noach; Hebrew: נֹחַ, וֹחַ, Modern Noaẖ Tiberian Nōăḥ; Arabic: نُوح Nūḥ; Greek: Νωέ; Macedonian: Ноа) was, according to the Hebrew Bible, the tenth and last of the antediluvian Patriarchs. The biblical story of Noah is contained in chapters 6-9 of the book of Genesis, where he saves his family and representatives of all animals from the flood by constructing an ark. He is also mentioned as the 'first husbandman' and in the story of the Curse of Ham. Noah is the subject of much elaboration in later Abrahamic traditions. Noah is also mentioned several times in the Qur'an.
