The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy encountered only small patches of seaice in the Chukchi Sea during the final days collecting ocean data for the2011 ICESCAPE mission.The ICESCAPE mission, or "Impacts of Climate on Ecosystems and Chemistryof the Arctic Pacific Environment," is a NASA shipborne investigation tostudy how changing conditions in the Arctic affect the ocean's chemistryand ecosystems. The bulk of the research took place in the Beaufort andChukchi seas in summer 2010 and 2011.

The 2011 joint mission employed the flagship icebreaker from each country, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy and the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Louis S. St-Laurent (LSSL), with each ship performing different functions and one ship breaking ice for the other.

Sea level rise is a natural consequence of the warming of our planet. We know this from basic physics. When water heats up, it expands. So when the ocean warms, sea level rises. When ice is exposed to heat, it melts. And when ice on land melts and water runs into the ocean, sea level rises. For thousands of years, sea level has remained relatively stable and human communities have settled along the planets coastlines. But now Earths seas are rising. Globally, sea level has risen about eight inches since the beginning of the 20th century and more than two inches in the last 20 years alone. All signs suggest that this rise is accelerating.

A new NASA-funded study has identified which glaciers in West Greenland are most susceptible to thinning in the coming decades by analyzing how theyre shaped. The research could help predict how much the Greenland Ice Sheet will contribute to future sea level rise in the next century, a number that currently ranges from inches to feet. “There are glaciers that popped up in our study that flew under the radar until now,” said lead author Denis Felikson, a graduate research assistant at The University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG) and a Ph.D. student in The University of Texas Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.
