More than 7,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans were held at the site, one of 10 internment camps in the American west. The camp's cemetery holds the graves of some of the 107 internees who died there.

It was here, in an upper roam, that Stevenson wrote "Thrawn Janet" and the greater part of the "Merry Menu. The former tale was the outcome of an extensive study of Scottish literature and witchcraft, and its author used to say that had he written nothing else save this and story of "Tad Lapraik" in "Catriona", he would still have been a writer.
