Veterans Memorial Plaza is shown Sept. 2, 2022, at the Commemorative Area at Fort McCoy, Wis. The 900 block of Fort McCoy and the 11-acre area surrounding it are at the hub of the forts history-preservation efforts and is called the Commemorative Area. The Commemorative Area consists of five World War II-era buildings set aside to help tell Fort McCoy's unique story. These facilities are representative of the types found in the cantonment area when it was constructed in 1942. Three of the buildings  an administrative facility, a dining facility, and a barracks  are set up to depict Soldier life during the 1940s. Display items include a World War II chapel, bunk beds, footlockers, mannequins, and potbelly stoves. Another building highlights four different modern military training venues, and a separate facility shows various training aids. The area also has the Equipment Park. On September 18th, a week after the attacks by terrorist in the United States, people from the British community at RAF Mildenhall, United Kingdom, show their respect by placing flowers outside the main gate. The sign reads: "God Bless America, Our hearts go out to the victims of the WTC & Pentagon". Shortly after 8 AM (EST) on September 11, 2001 in an attempt to frighten the American people, terrorist mounted attacks on the World Trade Centers Twin Towers in New York and at the Pentagon. Hijackers deliberately flew civilian airliners into the buildings, killing themselves, the passengers and thousands on the ground. A gravestone dedicated to U.S. Navy Water Tender 1st Class Milo E. Phillips sits at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii, August 4, 2022. Phillips was assigned to the USS Oklahoma, which capsized after sustaining multiple hits from Japanese aircraft and torpedoes, causing the deaths of more than 400 crew members on Dec. 7, 1941, at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. Stewart was recently identified through DNA analysis by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) forensic laboratory and laid to rest with full military honors.

A new helicopter training landing pad at Muir Army Airfield is dedicated to Chief Warrant Officer 3 Matthew Ruffner and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jarett Yoder during a ceremony in the Aviation Maintenance Instruction Building here.The two pilots were killed April 9, 2013 when the AH-64 Apache helicopter they were flying crashed during a flight mission in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. They were serving on a combat deployment with Bravo Company, 1-104th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 28th Combat Aviation Brigade during Operation Enduring Freedom.
