This 2006 image depicted five body lice, Pediculus humanus var. corporis, which from left to right included three nymphal-staged lice, beginning with a stage N1, then N2, and thirdly a N3-staged nymph, followed by an adult male louse, and finally an adult female louse. Lice are parasitic insects that can be found on people's heads, and bodies, including the pubic area. Human lice survive by feeding on human blood. Lice found on each area of the body are different from each other. The three types of lice that live on humans are: Pediculus humanus capitis (head louse), Pediculus humanus corporis (body louse, clothes louse), and Pthirus pubis(crab louse, pubic louse).Only the body louse is known to spread disease . Lice infestations are spread most commonly by close person-to-person contact. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not play a role in the transmission of human lice. Lice move by crawling, they cannot hop or fly. Both over-the-counter and prescription medications are available for tre

This female lone star tick, or Amblyomma americanum, was collected in Maryland. Lone star ticks can transmit the pathogens that cause diseases such as ehrlichiosis and Southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI. Bites from juvenile lone star ticks have been associated with alpha-gal syndrome, which causes a rare allergy to a component of red meat. Credit: NIAID

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - During solid rocket booster lifting operations on Launch Pad 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, a moth is spotted resting on a structure, oblivious to the action around it. The SRB will be mated with the Boeing Delta II rocket already in place. The Delta rocket is the launch vehicle for NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO). Preparations are under way for a liftoff no earlier than Aug. 1. STEREO consists of two spacecraft whose mission is the first to take measurements of the sun and solar wind in 3-D. This new view will improve our understanding of space weather and its impact on the Earth.
