Using immunohistochemical (IHC) technique, this photomicrograph of a human central nervous system (CNS) tissue specimen, revealed some of the cytoarchitectural histopathologic changes associated with a Nipah virus infection. Infection with Nipah virus has been associated with an encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) characterized by fever and drowsiness and more serious central nervous system disease, such as coma, seizures, and inability to maintain breathing. The natural reservoir for Nipah virus is still under investigation, but preliminary data suggest that bats of the genus Pteropus, are also the reservoirs for Nipah virus in Malaysia. Illness with Nipah virus begins with 3-14 days of fever and headache. This is followed by drowsiness and disorientation characterized by mental confusion. These signs and symptoms can progress to coma within 24-48 hours. Some patients have had a respiratory illness during the early part of their infections.

Protozoan (Tetrahymena pyriformis) infected with Legionella pneumophila. This transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an infected Tetrahymena pyriformis protozoa reveals in cross section, a chain of intracellular Legionella pneumophila bacteria. The bacteria are seen multiplying while they are contained inside an intracellular vesicle within the protozoan host cell. Experiments have shown, (BS Fields, EB Shotts, Jr, JC Feeley, GW Gorman, and WT Martin, Appl Environ Microbiol. 1984 Mar,47(3):467-71.), L. pneumophila bacteria can reproduce intracellularly acting as a parasite inside of the ciliated protozoan, Tetrahymena pyriformis, forming serpentine chains of approximately 10(3) L. pneumophila.

Acanthamoeba is a microscopic, free-living amoeba, or amoeba (single-celled living organism), that can cause rare but serious eye, skin, and central nervous system infections. The amoeba is found worldwide in the environment in water and soil. The amoeba can spread to the eyes through the use of contact lenses, cuts or wounds in the skin, or by being inhaled into the lungs. Most people will be exposed to Acanthamoeba in their lifetime, but very few will become ill from this exposure

An amoeba, also known as an amoebic granuloma, is a possible complication of an amoebic infection, after which a granuloma forms around the pathogen, usually in the wall of the cecum or ascending colon.
