Sappinia is an amoeba (a single-celled living organism), found in the environment. There are two known species of Sappinia: Sappinia diploidea and Sappinia pedata. This amoeba causes amoebic encephalitis, which is an infection of the brain. Worldwide, only one case of amoebic encephalitis due to Sappinia infection has been reported.

This colorized transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed the presence of a number of Novel H1N1 virus virions in this tissue culture sample. Novel H1N1 (referred to as swine flu early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that a pandemic of novel H1N1 flu was underway.

This transmission electron micrograph (TEM) depicted a number of Nipah virus virions that had been isolated from a patient's cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimen. Nipah virus is a member of the family Paramyxoviridae, and is related, but not identical to Hendra virus. Nipah virus was initially isolated in 1999 upon examining samples from an outbreak of encephalitis and respiratory illness among adult men in Malaysia and Singapore. Infection with Nipah virus was associated with an encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) characterized by fever and drowsiness and more serious central nervous system disease, such as coma, seizures, and inability to maintain breathing. Illness with Nipah virus begins with 3-14 days of fever and headache. This is followed by drowsiness and disorientation characterized by mental confusion. These signs and symptoms can progress to coma within 24-48 hours. Some patients have had a respiratory illness during the early part of their infections.

This photomicrograph of a trichrome-stained specimen revealed the presence of an Entamoeba hartmanni trophozoite (arrow). E. hartmanni is classified as a nonpathogenic intestinal protozoan organism. The trophozoites of E. hartmanni usually measure 5 to 15 m. These trophozoites possess a single nucleus which contains a small compact centrally or eccentrically located karyosome and thin and uniform peripheral chromatin. Nuclei are usually not visible in unstained specimens. The cytoplasm is finely granular. Trophozoite motility is described as non-progressive. CDC/Dr Mae Melvin 1977

Acanthamoeba is a microscopic, free-living amoeba, or amoeba (single-celled living organism), that can cause rare but serious eye, skin, and central nervous system infections. The amoeba is found worldwide in the environment in water and soil. The amoeba can spread to the eyes through the use of contact lenses, cuts or wounds in the skin, or by being inhaled into the lungs. Most people will be exposed to Acanthamoeba in their lifetime, but very few will become ill from this exposure.

Daniel Marks and his colleague Kevin Grove of Oregon Health and Science University studied the effects of a high-fat diet on developing organs using a non-human primate animal model. These photographs show the livers of fetuses from monkeys whose mothers had been fed either a regular low-fat diet (control) or a high-fat, high-calorie diet. The livers were treated with a compound (oil-red O) which stains fat deposits red. Significantly more fat deposits can be seen inside fetal liver cells in the high-fat diet group, a picture reminiscent of fatty liver disease commonly experienced in alcoholics.

This photomicrograph depicted numbers of Cryptococcus neoformans fungi, the etiologic agents responsible for the disease cryptococcosis. This slide was created from a lung specimen, and stained using the hemotoxylin and eosin (H and E) staining technique. Initially a pulmonary infection, cryptococcosis can become a systemically-disseminated disease leading to meningoencephalitis, or inflammation of the brain and its coverings, or meninges. Persons with HIV, or immunocompromised undergoing chemotherapy, are most susceptible.

It is commonly called the brain-eating amoeba because it can cause brain infection when water containing the amoeba rises in the nose.
