This photomicrograph of a brain tissue specimen depicts the cytoarchitectural changes associated with a free-living amebic infection, which may have been caused by either a Naegleria fowleri , or an Acanthamoeba sp. Using immunohistochemical (IHC) technique, this photomicrograph revealed some of the cytoarchitectural histopathologic changes associated with a Nipah virus infection, in this case, affecting an unknown animal's kidney tubules. Nipah virus, is a member of the family Paramyxoviridae, is related but not identical to Hendra virus. Nipah virus was initially isolated in 1999 upon examining samples from an outbreak of encephalitis and respiratory illness among adult men in Malaysia and Singapore. Its name originated from Sungai Nipah, a village in the Malaysian Peninsula where pig farmers became ill with encephalitis.

Using immunohistochemical (IHC) technique, this photomicrograph of a human tissue specimen, revealed some of the cytoarchitectural histopathologic changes associated with a Nipah virus infection, and its pathogenic influence upon the vascular elements depicted here, including the formation of a thrombus, and degenerative breakdown of the endothelial layer. Infection with Nipah virus has been associated with an encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) characterized by fever and drowsiness and more serious central nervous system disease, such as coma, seizures, and inability to maintain breathing.
