The main purpose of the program was to select lunar landing sites for NASA's manned Apollo Missions. Range 8.6 million kilometers (5.3 million miles) The Voyager took this 61 second exposure through the clear filter with the narrow angle camera of Neptune. The Voyager cameras were programmed to make a systematic search for faint ring arcs and new satellites. The bright upper corner of the image is due to a residual image from a previous long exposure of the planet. The portion of the arc visible here is approximately 35 degrees in longitudinal extent, making it approximately 38,000 kilometers (24,000 miles) in length, and is broken up into three segments separated from each other by approximately 5 degrees. The trailing edge is at the upper right and has an abrupt end while the leading edge seems to fade into the background more gradually. This arc orbits very close to one of the newly discovered Neptune satellites, 1989N4. Close-up studies of this ring arc will be carried out in the coming days which will give higher spatial resolution at different lighting angles. (JPL Ref P-34617)

Table of the Permeability of Various Substances to Roentgen Rays Made 1896 Austria. Wilhelm Conrad Rˆntgen discovered x-rays on November 8, 1895, and announced his surprising find in a scientific paper at the end of that year. Within days, newspapers everywhere had picked up the story, and the x-rayís manifold applications to science and society began to be explored. Just a few months later, the Austrian chemists Josef Maria Eder and Eduard Valenta replicated Rˆntgenís experiments and made improvements to his apparatus, publishing their research in a booklet accompanied by fifteen photogravure images depicting objects and animals. In this image, they showed the responsiveness of a variety of materials (metals, glass, bone, wood, rubber, and more) to the x-ray, showing a range of permeability that is represented as different shades of gray. Solar Eclipse from Caroline Island May 6, 1883 H. A. Lawrence On May 6, 1883, a dramatic total eclipse plunged the Sun into darkness for nearly six minutes. Several expeditions of prominent astronomers from the United States, Great Britain, France, and Italy convened on Caroline Island, a remote coral atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to observe and document the event. During the two weeks before the eclipse, the teams set up several makeshift observatories in canvas tents, as well as numerous free-standing telescopes, spectroscopes, and other astronomical instruments. Lawrence and Woods, British astronomers who sailed with the American mission on the U.S.S. Hartford, collected spectrographic data and recorded the eclipse with eleven cameras simultaneously.
