Churchill Tells When War Will End -- Mr. Churchill,First Lord of the Admiralty, as. he made his broadcast speech. Broadcasting to the nation on "The first month of the War Mr. Winston Churchill said that it was for Hitler to say when the war would begin, but it is not for him or his successors to say when it will end. 'It will end only when we are convinced that he has had enough'. Mr. Churchill also announced that the U-boat menace was being conquered, Britain having captured in the first month of the war 150,000 tons more German merchandise than we had lost by U-boat sinkings. Detachment 101, an enigmatic Allied intelligence and special operations unit during World War II, played a pivotal role in the Burmese theater. Operating deep in the jungles of Burma, their mission was multi-faceted, encompassing guerrilla warfare, espionage, and sabotage against Japanese forces. Comprising a diverse group of individuals, from OSS agents to indigenous fighters, they effectively disrupted Japanese supply lines, gathered critical intelligence, and supported resistance movements.

John Paul Vann (July 2, 1924 - June 9, 1972) was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, later retired, who became well-known for his role in the Vietnam War, especially in the Central Highlands and around Kontum. Vann was killed in a helicopter crash in the Central Highlands and buried on June 16, 1972 in Arlington National Cemetery. His funeral was attended by such notables as Gen. William Westmoreland, Maj. Gen. Edward Lansdale, Lt. Col. Lucien Conein, Senator Edward Kennedy, and Daniel Ellsberg. On June 18, President Richard Nixon posthumously awarded Vann the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian citation, for his ten years of service as a top American in South Vietnam. For his actions from April 23-24, 1972, Vann, ineligible for the Medal of Honor as a civilian, was also awarded (posthumously) the Distinguished Service Cross, the only civilian so honored in Vietnam.
