Clement Attlee Lays South Bank Concert Hall Foundation Stone -- Prime Minister Clement Attlee, as he lays the foundation stone of the new Concert Hall on the South Bank site.Prime Minister Clement Attlee this afternoon (Wednesday) laid the foundation stone of the new concert hall which will rise on the South Bank site.Underneath the stone, in a special recess, a basket had been placed, for posterity, containing a set of present-day coins, a copy of the "Times", a National Daily newspaper, documents of the London County Council relating to the concert hall, and the Festival of Britain, 1951, which is to be held on the South Bank, and a copy of the wedding anthem, composed by Benjamin Brittan, for the recent wedding of the Earl of Harewood and Miss. Londoners' Meals Service- Canteen at Fishmongers' Hall, London Bridge, London, 1942 City workers and sailors climb the grand staircase at Fishmongers' Hall to the Londoners' Meals Service canteen. A board on the landing states that the minimum price for a midday meal is 1/. A two course meal is 1/, and a three course meal is 1/3. Suppers are 1/6 are are three courses, except on Thursdays. A notice on the board reads: 'Please pay for whichever you require on entry as NO extra separate courses are sold'. The walls of the staircase are covered in peeling paint, which have 'not been repaired in the interests of wartime economy'. The building was badly damaged by fire in 1940 and the roof over this staircase destroyed.

The Anniversary Of An Execution -- Mr. Bentley laying his wreath last night.One year ago yesterday the youth Derek William Bentley was executed for his part in the murder of a police constable, last night his father laid a wreath at the gates of Wandsworth prison in memory of his son.Nineteen-year-old Bentley and his friend 16-year-old Christopher Craig where found guilty of the murder of a policeman in November 1952. Craig, who fired the shot which killed the policeman, was too young to be sentenced to death and was ordered to be detained in strict custody during the Queen's pleasure. Queen Mary's Carpet For U.S.A. And Canada. -- The carpet being packed in the casket - under police guard - by Miss Patricia Hardie, who will be in charge of it during the journey. The beautiful carpet made by H.M. Queen Mary and presented by her to the nation to help the dollar drive, is being sent to the U.S.A. and Canada, where it will be placed on exhibition to the public.
