Sir John Black, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of the Standard Motor Company, and Chairman of the Triumph Company, is the driving force behind Standard Motor Company.During World War I, he served with the R.N.V.R. at Gallipoli and in the Tank Corps in France. He was retired with the rank of captain.In 1929, Captain Black joined the standard Motor Company became Director and General Manager the following year In 1940 he was appointed Chairman of the Joint Aero Engine Committee in charge of the Shadow Factory Group. He was knighted for his work in this connection, in 1943. December 01, 1949.

Major Boon Cleared Of Six Charges Will Defend Remaining Five -- A new picture of Major Cecil Boon taken at the Court Martial. Major Cecil Boon, R.A.S.C., was, at Curzon Street, London today (Thursday) found not guilty on sir of the eleven charges alleging that, while a prisoner of war in Hong Kong, he voluntarily aided the Japanese. Following a submission by defending counsel, Mr. G.O. Slade, K. C., and Mr. Neville Faulks, it was ruled by the Judge Advocate, Wing Commander O. Barnett, that no prima facie case had tomorrow (Friday) Major Boon will give evidence in his defence of the remaining five charges. September 12, 1946.

Our "Darkest Hour"A turning-point in the tide of war for Australia was recalled at Fremantle yesterday by Vice-Admiral J. W. Durnford (pictured), a retired Royal Navy man who was me Second Naval Member of the Australian Naval Board in 1941-42.The "darkest hour" was soon after the Japanese entered the war and the Repulse and Renown were sunk while on an operation near Singapore.At that moment, he was Acting-First Naval Member, and he still recalls the anxiety of those days when the Australian Navy was beginning a great expansion in ships, manpower and port facilities.He remembers also the relief he felt at the successful conclusion of the Battle of the Coral Sea, which "stemmed the tide in the Pacific." Detachment 101, an enigmatic Allied intelligence and special operations unit during World War II, played a pivotal role in the Burmese theater. Operating deep in the jungles of Burma, their mission was multi-faceted, encompassing guerrilla warfare, espionage, and sabotage against Japanese forces. Comprising a diverse group of individuals, from OSS agents to indigenous fighters, they effectively disrupted Japanese supply lines, gathered critical intelligence, and supported resistance movements.

Commodore Eugene A. Coffin Is Awarded Legion of Merit. "For exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as District Coast Guard Officer, Fourth Naval District, from April 1942 to April 1945 and as District Coast Guard Officer, Fourteenth Naval District, from July to September 1945" Commodore Eugene A. Coffin was awarded the Legion of Merit, which was presented to him at the annual meeting of the Coast Guard District Commanders held in Washington on June 3, 1947. Commodore Coffin's citation goes on to say that he was "Responsible for maintaining the security of our ports, safeguarding the uninterrupted flow of vessel traffic in port and on navigational routes and increasing the safety of the men and property in the Merchant Marine, Commodore (then Captain) Coffin rendered invaluable service in the performance of his vital duties.
