Checkpoint Charlie (or "Checkpoint C"), the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War, seen here in the 1972 T.he German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) built the Berlin Wall in 1961, cutting off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. It was destroyed in 1989; German reunification formally concluded on October 3, 1990.
