The T-33 was the first U.S. Air Force jet trainer, and was originally developed as a two-seat version of the F-80. New British Jet Is Best In The World, Says Sir Frank First Details Just Released -- A front view of the new top secret hawker P1067, first details of which have just been released in London by the Hawker Siddeley Group. In a statement made by Sir Frank Spencer Spriggs, K.B.E., he said 'We believe this is the best fighting aircraft anywhere in the world to-day.'Designed by the famous Hawker team, led by Sidney Camm, C.B.E., of Hurricane fame, and developed and produced at Kingston (Surrey), the aircraft has successfully gone through its first flight trials at the Ministry of Supply experimental station at Boscombe Down, piloted by Squadron Leader Neville Duke, D.C.O, D.F.C., A.F.C. During the final phase of tests with the HARV, Dryden technicians installed nose strakes, which were panels that fitted flush against the sides of the forward nose. When the HARV was at a high alpha, the aerodynamics of the nose caused a loss of directional stability. Extending one or both of the strakes results in strong side forces that, in turn, generated yaw control. This approach, along with the aircraft's Thrust Vectoring Control system, proved to be stability under flight conditions in which conventional surfaces, such as the vertical tails, were ineffective.
