They stopped in for some gas ontheir way to Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida for a training exercise. The ramp was busy with fueling and many other mission flights including, KC-135 Stratotankers, B-52 Stratofortresses and of course our own E-3 AWACS snuck into the action as well. Staff Sgt. David Edens, a crew chief with the 169th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at McEntire Joint National Guard Base, S.C., performs pre-flight checks as Lt. Col. Boris Armstrong, a pilot with the 157th Fighter Squadron prepares to launch an F-16 Falcon from Joint Base Balad. The 169th FW sent F-16's, pilots, maintenance specialists, and support personnel overseas for its first major combat operation since 2003, when the unit deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and flew more than 400 combat missions. The 169th FW is now an "Active Associate" wing. This unique agreement with the 20th FW at Shaw AFB embeds 150 active duty Airmen with the 169th FW at McEntire. Elements of the S.C. Air National Guard's 169th FW began this historic deployment in early May 2010 when airmen landed at JBB in support of OIF.
