KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - At Patrick Air Force Base in Cocoa Beach, Fla., the WB-57F aircraft is ready for a test flight. The aircraft will take photos of Space Shuttle Discovery during its launch on Return to Flight mission STS-114. NASA approved the development and implementation of the aircraft-based imaging system, known as the WB-57 Ascent Video Experiment (WAVE). The WAVE provides both ascent and entry imagery and enables better observation of the Shuttle on days of heavier cloud cover and areas obscured from ground cameras by the launch exhaust plume. WAVE comprises a 32-inch-ball turret system mounted on the nose of two WB-57 aircraft. The turret houses an optical bench, providing installation of both HDTV and infrared cameras. Optics consist of an 11-inch-diameter, 4.2 meter fixed-focal-length lens. The system can be operated in both auto track and manual modes.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Two of the crewmembers for the STS-124 mission, Mission Specialists Ron Garan and Karen Nyberg, depart NASA's Kennedy Space Center in a T-38 training jet after a successful launch dress rehearsal called the terminal countdown demonstration test. The crew is expected to return in late May for the May 31 launch of space shuttle Discovery. On the STS-124 mission, the crew will deliver and install the Japanese Experiment Module - Pressurized Module and Japanese Remote Manipulator System.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A U.S. Air Force Thunderbird F-16D aircraft rolls to a stop at the Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility. The pilot is Maj. Tad Clark, who announced to waiting media that Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will host the inaugural World Space Expo from Nov. 3 to 11. The Expo, which will feature an aerial salute by the Thunderbirds on its opening weekend, will create one of the largest displays of space artifacts, hardware and personalities ever assembled in one location with the objective to inspire, educate and engage the public by highlighting the achievements and benefits of space exploration.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - One of the T-38 jet aircraft returning STS-114 crew members to Houston sits on the Shuttle Landing Facility. Crew members were at KSC for Shuttle and mission equipment familiarization. The STS-114 mission is Logistics Flight 1, which is scheduled to deliver supplies and equipment, plus the external stowage platform, to the International Space Station.

. The ALOFT mission, Airborne Lightning Observatory for Flys eye simulator and Terrestrial gamma ray flashes, is a collaboration between NASA and the University of Bergen, Norway. NASA Armstrong Flight Research Centers ER-2 aircraft flies just above the height of thunderclouds over the Floridian and Caribbean coastlines to collect data about lightning glows and terrestrial gamma ray flashes. Scientists expect to collect more accurate data than ever before that can advance the study of high-energy radiation emissions from thunderstorms.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - As seen on Google Maps, space shuttle Endeavour goes through transition and retirement processing in high bay 4 of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The spacecraft completed 25 missions beginning with its first flight, STS-49, in May 1992, and ending with STS-134 in May 2011. It helped construct the International Space Station in orbit and travelled more than 122 million miles in orbit during its career. The reaction control system pods in the shuttle's nose and aft section were removed for processing before Endeavour was put on public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Google precisely mapped the space center and some of its historical facilities for the company's map page. The work allows Internet users to see inside buildings at Kennedy as they were used during the space shuttle era.
