CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- STS-135 Commander Chris Ferguson and Pilot Doug Hurley are ready to take off from the Shuttle Landing Facility runway at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida to perform touch-and-go landings aboard their Shuttle Training Aircrafts (STA).An STA is a Gulfstream II jet that is modified to mimic the shuttle's handling during the final phase of landing. Ferguson and Hurley will practice landings as part of standard training before space shuttle Atlantis' launch to the International Space Station. Atlantis and its crew are targeted to lift off July 8, to deliver the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module packed with supplies and spare parts to the station. The STS-135 mission also will fly a system to investigate the potential for robotically refueling existing satellites and return a failed ammonia pump module to help NASA better understand the failure mechanism and improve pump designs for future systems. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- The airplane used by the U.S. Army Golden Knights arrives at the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The Golden Knights will demonstrate precision skydiving as part of the World Space Expo being held from Nov. 1 to Nov. 4 at the NASA Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Other air demonstrations are planned by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Aerial Demonstration Squadron, the U.S. Navy F-18 Super Hornets, U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor, U.S. Air Force F-15 Eagle, the P-51 Mustang Heritage Flight and the U.S. Air Force 920th Rescue Wing, which was responsible for Mercury and Gemini capsule recovery. The World Space Expo is an event to commemorate humanity's first 50 years in space while looking forward to returning people to the moon and exploring beyond. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - As the sun sets at the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, preparations are under way for STS-131 Commander Alan Poindexter and Pilot James P. Dutton Jr. to practice landing this Shuttle Training Aircraft, or STA. STS-131 will be Poindexter's second space shuttle flight and Dutton's first. The aircraft is a Gulfstream II jet, modified to handle like the space shuttle. The crew members of space shuttle Discovery's STS-131 mission are at Kennedy for training related to their launch dress rehearsal, the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test. The seven-member crew will deliver the multi-purpose logistics module Leonardo, filled with resupply stowage platforms and racks, to the International Space Station aboard Discovery. Targeted for launch on April 5, STS-131 will be the 33rd shuttle mission to the station and the 131st shuttle mission overall.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - KSC Director of Shuttle Processing Michael E. Wetmore (left) greets NASA Administrator Sean OKeefe upon his arrival at the Shuttle Landing Facility. OKeefe is visiting KSC to survey the damage sustained by KSC facilities from Hurricane Frances over Labor Day weekend. Center Director Jim Kennedy (center) was also on hand to welcome OKeefe. The Vehicle Assembly Building, Thermal Protection System Facility, and Processing Control Center all received significant damage from the storm. Additionally, the Operations and Checkout Building, Vertical Processing Facility, Hangar AE, Hangar S and Hangar AF Small Parts Facility each received substantial damage. However, well-protected and unharmed were NASAs three Space Shuttle orbiters -- Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour - along with the Shuttle launch pads, all of the critical flight hardware for the orbiters and the International Space Station, and NASAs Swift spacecraft that is awaiting launch in October.
