Coast Guard Chief Decorated for Heroism. John T. Hendrix, Chief Electrician's Mate, U.S. Coast Guard, wins the Navy and Marine Corps medal for his part in the rescue of 144 crew members of a stricken merchantman, lost in the North Atlantic during March, 1943. Hendrix's citation, ready by Rear Admiral James Pine, superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn., during the decoration ceremonies, stipulates the award is "for outstanding heroism." Chief Hendrix is a Coast Guard veteran with two hitches to his credit and two full years of convoy and anti-submarine duty chalked up on his war record.
