For The Many -- Both sides of the new Defense Medal, now being made by the Royal Mint in London. In London, the Royal Mint has begun work on the Defence Medal, which is being made of cupro-nickel. On one side is the King's head; on the other, the Imperial crown over an oak tree, defended by a lion and lioness, with the inscription "1939-1945. The Defence Medal". Coast Guardsman Trades Cigarettes for Medals. Axis prisoners gladly traded their medals for American cigarettes, according to Coast Guardsman Carter Barber of Pasadena, Cal., just returned from North Africa. Shown above are some of the Coast Guardsman's souvenirs. Plate at the top is from the engine of a wrecked German plane; in the center is a German Iron Cross, second class; medal at the left is also German, while that at the right is from an Italian prisoner. Coast Guardsman Barber was aboard the Navy submarine chaser 496 when it sank following an underwater explosion in the Mediterranean.
