The Sri Lankan Civil War began on July 23, 1983, and quickly developed into an on-and-off insurgency against the Colombo government by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), commonly known as the Tamil Tigers, and other few rebel groups, which were fighting to create an independent Tamil state named Tamil Eelam in the north and the east of the island. After a 26-year military campaign, the Sri Lankan military defeated the Tamil Tigers in May 2009.

Reeducation camp (Vietnamese: trại học tập cải tạo) is the official title given to the prison camps operated by the government of Vietnam following the end of the Vietnam War. In such camps, the government imprisoned several hundred thousand former military officers and government workers from the former government of South Vietnam. Reeducation as it was implemented in Vietnam was seen as both a means of revenge and as a sophisticated technique of repression and indoctrination, which developed for several years in the North and was extended to the South following the 1975 Fall of Saigon.

Vo Nguyen Giap (Vietnamese: Võ Nguyên Giáp) born 25 August, 1911, died 4 October 2013, was a Vietnamese officer in the Vietnam People's Army and a politician. He was a principal commander in two wars: the First Indochina War (1946-1954) and the Second Indochina War (1960-1975). He participated in the following historically significant battles: Lng Son (1950); Hòa Bình (1951-1952); Ðin Biên Ph (1954); the Tt Offensive (1968); the Nguyên Hu Offensive (known in the West as the Easter Offensive) (1972); and the final H Chí Minh Campaign (1975). He was also a journalist, an interior minister in President H Chí Minh’s Vit Minh government, the military commander of the Vit Minh, the commander of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), and defense minister. He also served as Politburo member of the Vietnamese Communist Party. He was the most prominent military commander together with H Chí Minh during the war and was responsible for major operations and leadership until the war ended.
