Humane Association honors Coast Guard hero. For going over the side of his ship in mid-ocean to rescue a dog on a raft, Lieutenant (j.g.) Harry Keene of the U. S. Coast Guard has been awarded a gold medal by the American Humane Association. Shown with Lieutenant Keene, center, during presentation ceremonies in Washington, D.C., are Vice Admiral Russell R. Waesche, Coast Guard commandant, and Sidney Coleman, New York, association president. A half hour after rescuing the dog, Lieutenant Keene again jumped into the cold North Atlantic and rescued a fellow crew member washed overboard, losing a tooth in the struggle that ensued when the drowning man became panicky. Lieutenant Keene's home is in Washington.
