The famine disaster in Ireland in the mid-19th century brought about many premature deaths. Destitute people in Skibbereen often lay dead for days without burial as the rate of death was so high and resources so few. These miserable conditions were brought on by the potato famine in the mid 19th century and further compounded by the forced evictions of poverty-stricken peasants from their homes and farms. William Bligh (1754-1817) English naval officer and his 18 companions cast adrift in the longboat by Fletcher Christian and the 'Bounty' mutineers on 28 April 1789. With few supplies and no charts, after 4,000 miles and great privations, landed on Timor 14 June 1789.

The caption for this early 1900s illustration reads: Death of Nero Nero, the worst of all tyrants who tortured Rome, died by his own hand. He had slain so many of his subjects, that at last there was a sudden conspiracy, and he was driven from the throne. He fled like a frightened rat, and hid in a slaves cellar. Soldiers hunted him down; he begged to be allowed to live, no matter how. He had found delicious pleasure in the murder of others, but it was not until he was warned that his late subjects were planning to torture him to death, that he managed to screw up enough courage to die, himself. He placed a dagger to his throat, one of his slaves drove it home, and he was dying when the mob burst in on him. The year was 68 A.D.

Ancient Rome, 4th century BC. After the sack of Rome by the Gauls, the survivors of the city took refuge in the Capitol, raised on one of the city's hills and also where the temple of Juno was located. Inside the temple lived the sacred geese, used for sacrifices in honour of the goddess Juno. One night, the Gauls tried to attack the Romans who had taken refuge there. They climbed the hill, taking advantage of the silence of the night. The Roman guards and the dogs had fallen asleep, but the Gauls raiders encountered the geese, which became frightened and made a great fuss, waking the Romans. They were able to respond and repel the attack. However, the resistance to the Gauls' siege was prolonged and the Romans decided to pay a ransom to the Gauls in exchange for their leaving the city. Thanksgiving Day--Hanging Up the Musket Winslow Homer (American, 1836-1910). , 1865. Wood engraving, Sheet: 14 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. (36.2 x 23.5 cm). With the long Civil War finally over, veterans could hang up their guns as trophies of battle. Following some controversy, President Johnson signed a bill in spring 1865 allowing soldiers to retain their firearms, recognizing that ownership of these guns was a source of pride. In this engraving by Winslow Homer, the grandfathers broken gun of 1776, symbolizing the shattered promises of the Revolutionary War, hangs above the new firearm of the most recent war. The image accompanied an article that declared, "Now we have peace smiling over all the land, and its promise for many years to come." Regarded as one of the great American Realists of the nineteenth century, Homer is known primarily for his large body of works in oil and watercolor.
