SOUTHERN SHORSHORK, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Afghanistan National Army 1st Sgt. Najibullah Bakht Beland addresses the concerns of local elders near the first observation post 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, set up in Southern Shorshork, Helmand province, Afghanistan, as part of Operation Cobra, June 16. “We are here for Afghanistan to build up the area,” Beland, from Jalalabad, said. “We are from this country to serve this country.” The ANA and 3/3 ended up moving from the original compound they took over as a combat outpost, due to the proximity to a cemetery where women go to pray. After getting permission to stay for the night, the Marines and ANA moved to a new position further south. Operation Cobra is a joint operation between Marine Corps units and the Afghanistan National Army to disrupt enemy forces which have been using the sparsely populated region between Marjah and Nawa as a safe haven.
