The annual wreath laying event celebrates the life and service of the former president, which is held in the rose garden at the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, hosted by the National Park Service at the home of the FDR National Historic Site. USMA Dean of the Academic Board Brig. Gen. Shane Reeves placed a Presidential Wreath on the behalf of President Joseph R. Biden in honor of FDR at the event. Approximately 63 individuals were disinterred as part of the Enoura Maru project: an on-going effort by DPAA to disinter, transport, and identify missing POWs from World War II. In honor of Memorial Day, Sailors from Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) placed American flags on the 880 graves located on Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads-Portsmouth Annex Captain Ted Conaway Memorial Naval Cemetery, May 26. The grave site is laid out in four quadrants forming a Greek cross, and the earliest marked grave is that of George Butler, a Sailor who fell to his death in an accident aboard the USS Constitution on Aug. 1, 1838. The cemetery's burials represent not only American dead, but also individuals from Brazil, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Russia Spain, Sweden and Germany are buried here. As the U.S. Navys oldest, continuously-operating military hospital since 1830, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, part of the Tidewater Market, serves eligible beneficiaries at the nationally-acclaimed, state-of-the-art medical center, along with the areas 10 branch health and TRICARE Prime Clinics.

Remains of U.S. Army Air Corps Cpl. LaVerne Dirk Van Dyke, B-25 crew member, is laid to rest at the Zeeland Cemetery, Michigan, May 12, 2022. Van Dyke's great-niece, Beth Klomparen and great-nephew, Steve Klomparen accepted the ceremonial folded flag from Wright-Patterson Air Force Honor Guard 80 years after Van Dykes death. Remains of six crew members were found in a remote area of Papua New Guinea in 1998. The DNA analysis process to identify the remains took 20 years and another three years to bring Van Dyke home to his final resting place.

The ceremony commemorated the ending of the Battle of the Bulge on this date in 1945.The Battle of the Bulge, described by Winston Churchill as "undoubtedly the greatest American battle" of World War II, took place in the Ardennes Forest region of Belgium and Luxembourg from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945. The last major German counteroffensive on the Western Front, it ended in victory for Allied forces under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower  but at great cost. Soldiers fought in brutal winter conditions, and the U.S. Army lost approximately 19,000 men (and suffered some 75,000 total casualties) in what became the United States' deadliest single World War II battle.

DPAAs mission is to achieve the fullest possible accounting for missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.

A mix up with dog tags and body identification led the remains listed as Unknown and buried in the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery (Not shown). For the members of the Idaho Patriot Guard Riders Memorial Day is a weekly remembrance. The Patriot Guard Riders are a national organization with state chapters spread out in regional areas. The PGR creed is simple - Standing for those who stood for us. In Idaho, the PGR is often present at the committal services for active duty members of the military, members of the Idaho National Guard, and Veterans that take place at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in the foothills of Boise and communities throughout Idaho.  Boise PGR members often ride or drive at their own expense to services for veterans in eastern Idaho, about a 3 - 4 hour drive from Boise. Some PGR members are veterans, some not. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Kennedy Space Center Employees and guests placed wreaths and flowers at the Space Mirror Memorial at the spaceport's Visitor Complex during NASA's Day of Remembrance. The annual event took place on the 10th anniversary of the loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its crew and was hosted by the Astronauts Memorial Foundation. The ceremony also honored the astronauts of Apollo 1, who perished in 1967, and the shuttle Challenger, lost in 1986, as well as other astronauts who lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery. Dedicated in 1991, the names of fallen astronauts are emblazoned the monument's 4.5-foot-high-by-50-foot-wide polished black granite surface which reflects the sky and has been designated by Congress as a National Memorial.
