Funeral Zuiderbegraafplaats in Groningen, 1940 photograph On Wednesday, October 16, 1940, a serious bus accident took place in Groningen on the train transition at Ranum between Winsum and Baflo. In addition, thirteen work workers were killed, who were on the way to the polder work at De Slikken. Nine of the thirteen victims were buried together with great interest on Saturday, October 19, 1940 at the Groninger Zuiderbegraafplaats. Representative of the government commissioner for Groningen Dr. C. Conring spoke on behalf of the German authorities. While a wreath was laid by officers of the German weather forces. Among those present were also the mayor of Groningen P.W.J.H. Cort van der Linden and the commissioner of the province of Groningen J. Linthorst Homan. Denmark After Liberation, 1945 The memorial stone unveiled at the end of a ceremony in a forest clearing at Maarum, north of Copenhagen. The memorial commemorates Flight Lieutenant R H Thomas and Flying Officer G J Allin who died when their Mosquito aircraft crashed at the site in September 1944. The memorial commemorated these two airmen and the work of the Royal Air Force in dropping arms and equipment to Danish resistance fighters who operated from the nearby forest. The memorial was raised by donations from local villagers and former members of the Danish resistance.
