The 8th Army's Recapture of Sollum - Ono man held up for a time by the break in the road out of Sollum whilst the commander of the 8th army, Lt. General Sir Bernard Montgomery, K.C.B. he improved the situation by sitting down to a pinic lunch.Hot on the hools of Rommel's flooing troops, the Eighth army swept into Sollum and up Halfaya pass a few miles away. Royal Air Force Fighter Command, 1939-1945. Flight-Lieutenant M H Brown and Pilot Officer Chatham of No. 1 Squadron RAF standing by the nose of a Hawker Hurricane Mark I at Wittering, Huntingdonshire. Mark Henry Brown was the first Canadian fighter pilot of the war to become an 'ace'. He had, by the time this photograph was taken, shot down at least 18 enemy aircraft over France and Great Britain, and in the following month, was appointed Commanding Officer of No. 1 Squadron. One year later, flying from Malta, he was killed in a fighter sweep over Sicily.

Morris holds the torch after it has been lit by Field Marshal Montgomery, who is seen standing on the left during the ceremony at Portsmouth today.An impressive ceremony took place on the site of the D-Day Memorial at Portsmouth to-day (Monday) when Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery performed the lighting of a "Torch of Freedom" to commemorate the entry of British forces into Holland the capture of Eindhoven, and the airborne assault on Aunhem. The torch was then taken aboard one of the Royal Navy's little ships, M. L. 223, to be carried across to ouistreham, port of Bayeuv. From there it will be caried through France, Belgium and Holland. Only Women's Transport Corps In Camp - Washing up! Each camper must wash up her own "crocks" after meals at the community sink. Members of the only women's transport corps which has continued training and recruiting without ceasing since the war are now in camp at Mychett, near Aldershot, Hampshire. They belong to the Women's Transport Service which is recognized by the Army Council as a voluntary transport organization. In times of national emergency the corps is at the service of the Government.
