ATLANTIC OCEAN (Sept. 14, 2022) - U.S. Marine helicopter pilots land two UH-1Y Venom on the flight deck of the amphibious transport dock ship USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) during flight operations, Sept. 14, 2022. Mesa Verde is currently underway in the Atlantic Ocean in support of exercise UNITAS LXIII. UNITAS is the worlds longest-running maritime exercise. Hosted this year by Brazil, it brings together multinational forces from Belize, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Namibia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and the United States conducting operations in and off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The exercise trains forces to conduct joint maritime operations through the execution of anti-surface, anti-submarine, anti-air, amphibious and electronic warfare operations that enhance warfighting proficiency and increase interoperability among participating naval and marine forces.

Murtha (LPD 26) during Operation POLAR DAGGER, Sept. 2, 2023. Amphibious transport dock ships like John P. Murtha have many unique capabilities that make them ideal platforms to support special operations forces, such as the ability to embark helicopters from the joint force, launch and recover Naval Special Warfare combatant craft, and maintain all-domain awareness through advanced sensors. Members from the South Carolina Army National Guards 1/151 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion at McEntire Joint National Guard Base, South Carolina, work to move 10 Apache helicopters from the ARNG side of the base to the Air National Guards F-16 hangar. McEntire ANGs F-16s are being flown to an off-site location allowing the space needed for the ARNGs helicopters to be stored in preparation of Tropical Storm Hanna, which is expected to make landfall in the near future.
