Walter Reed National Military Medical Center hosted a Black History Month observance on Feb. 6, 2024, in Memorial Auditorium, featuring retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Norvell Van Coots. Coots served as the last director of the Walter Reed Health Care System (WRHCS) and hospital at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), before the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) of 2005, which consolidated the National Naval Medical Center and WRAMC (which served as the headquarters of WRHCS), culminating in the opening of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in November 2011. He currently serves as the chairman of the Board for Maryland Physicians Care and concurrently presides over the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center Hospital.During his presentation titled Health Equity: African Americans and the Arts, Coots traced his journey into medicine, paying homage to his parents - both of whom were physicians. Opened in 1911, NSGL is the Navys largest training installation and the home of the Navys only Boot Camp. Located on over 1600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, the installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. NSGL supports over 50 tenant commands and elements as well as over 20,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and DoD civilians who live and work on the installation.

1st Sgt. Charles L. Johnson Retirement Ceremony, 30th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Air Defense Artillery Commandant's Office, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. 1st Sgt. Charles L. Johnson retired today after 20 over years serving in the U.S. Army.  His presence as a senior enlisted Soldier as part of the Air Defense community is one that will not soon be forgotten. Johnson spent over 8 years stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and contributed immensely to the Air Defense mission by serving as a 1st Sgt. for 30th Air Defense Artillery and by leading troops towards careers of excellence while serving in the Commandant's office as the Operations NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer).Johnson served two tours overseas, one to Kuwait and one to Bahrain. His time there was well noted by the various military awards he received and prestigious accolades. AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy--This weeks Wyvern Warrior of the Week is Federico Olimpi, 31st Civil Engineer Squadron computer assistant.Olimpi developed three different mobile applications to get our Wyvern Nation more connected and to making daily processes faster.CAMPUS31 is a phone application designed to provide two-way communication between dorm residents with dorm managers. The app allows timely requests to be submitted to dorm managers for issues such as door problems, lost keys and water leaks. Residents can use the app to stay up to date with the latest news and events sent out by Airmen Dorm Leaders, Public Affairs or First Sergeants and it can be downloaded for free by dorm residents. It helps them stay in touch with the Airman Dorm Leaders, said Olimpi.
