Jittery Photographer "Shoots" First Coast Guardsman In Japan. A Coast Guard Combat Photographer who snapped pin-sharp pictures during the thunder of battle on many Pacific beach-heads was overcome with excitement when he saw a shipmate jump ashore to gain the distinction of being the first Coast Guardsman in Japan. His shaking camera caught Seaman First Class Gene L. Lorendo of Gilbert, Minn., as he directed the beaching of a Coast Guard-manned LST which delivered Seabees to the Yokosuka Naval Base. The Big Tank Landing Ship, a veteran of the Okinawa and Iwo Jima invasions, was among the first cargo-bearing vessels to reach Japan.

The Yanks Hit Cape Sansapor From Coast Guard-Manned LST. First troops to hit Cape Sansapor spring into the surf from the mouth of a Coast Guard-manned LST. Capture of this Jap base on the western end of Dutch New Guinea completed the American hop by hop conquest of the northern coast of New Guinea. It provided a fine base for air protection of the subsequent smash into the Palau Islands. After the Coast Guard-manned LST had brought the troops ashore, heavy equipment rolled from its decks to the beach.
