Commander Richard L. Burke, U.S. Coast Guard. Commander Richard L. Burke, 40, U.S. Coast Guard, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, it was announced today. The award was made "for heroism and extraordinary achievement as commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station at Elizabeth City, N.C. North Carolina." Commander Burke performed a rescue of German survivors of a destroyed enemy submarine on one occasion. Landing his plane on the open sea in waves estimated at eight feet in height, on another occasion, he transferred from a ship to his plane a Navy enlisted man who was urgently in need of an emergency operation.

Coxswain Mack A. Shippey of Flint, Michigan. Coxswain Mack A. Shippey, 26 year old Coast Guardsman of Flint, Michigan, returned to this country after serving in the South Pacific where he made six trips to Guadalcanal. On the first trip he was in charge of a landing boat on the original invasion. After bringing his charges ashore he spent two months on the island, and was removed when he was stricken with malaria. Reassigned to his old ship, he made five more trips to the island in the months that followed. Shippey was one of thirteen Coast Guardsmen serving aboard a Navy destroyer for the purpose of handling landing boats.
