One of the Jap barges, flying a white flag approaches the frigate. On Sept. 1 the Australian Frigate, H.M.A.S. "Barcoo", accompanied by two P.T. boats, kept a rendezvous with the Japanese off the coast of the Halmaheras, when 153 Indian P.O.Ws. were handed over. These Indians were amongst those captured in Singapore. Of the 211 men in the original group, 44 died from various causes, 16 were beheaded by order of the camp commandant and eight escaped and are still back in the hills. The rescued men were in poor condition. Very bad cases of beriberi and dysentry were evident. The ship's company looked on in grim silence as the five Jap barges, manned by Japanese, brought the men to the ship. The ship's doctor and the sick bay attendants treated the worst cases and the frigate raced back to Morotai. September 06, 1945. (Photo by Australian Official Photo).
