Frightened Civilians Flee From Aachen - Packing as many of their belongings as possible into a handcart made hard work for these German evacuees. Slacks for girls appeared to be the most "Goingout" attire. As American troops drove deeper into the doomed city of Aachen, they met crowds of civilians trudging wearily from the cellars and shelters in which they had hidden during the fierce Bombardment. Photograph showing men of the British First Airborne Division marching into Arnhem with their guns and equipment, after landing outside the town, September 1944. On 17th September 1944 Operation 'Market Garden' was put into action; a bold plan devised by Field-Marshal Montgomery to drop thousands of airborne troops into Holland to capture an invasion route into Germany.
