The construction area for a future transient training brigade headquarters in the 1600 block on the cantonment area is shown Dec. 9, 2022, in snowy conditions at Fort McCoy, Wis. A contract, totaling $11,964,432.87, was awarded June 9, 2022, to L.S. Black Constructors to build the fiscal year 2022 Transient Training Brigade Headquarters project at Fort McCoy. Construction operations began in August 2022. Location of construction is just across the street from where the same contractor has been building two new transient training troop barracks buildings in the same block. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, which is managing the project, the brigade headquarters project is based on the denser, more consolidated footprints of Fort McCoys Troop Housing Area Development Plan which states fewer, multiple story buildings allow facilities/functions to be sited closer together, allowing for a more walkable training environment, as well as saving money on utilities. An aircrew with the Wisconsin National Guards 1st Battalion, 147th Aviation Regiment operates a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter May 18, 2022, at Fort McCoy, Wis. Members of the unit regularly complete training operations at Fort McCoy and the unit also supports numerous training events at the installation each year. According to the Army fact sheet for the Black Hawk, its mission is to provide air assault, general support, aeromedical evacuation, command and control, and special operations support to combat, stability, and support operations. The UH-60 also is the Armys utility tactical transport helicopter. The versatile helicopter has enhanced the overall mobility of the Army due to dramatic improvements in troop capacity and cargo lift capability over the years as well.

The visit was a part of the JROTC program offered at Hirschi High School, headed by Senior Army Instructor Major (R) David Jenson."Today's visit was to enlighten the kids about history in the military," said Major (R) Jenson. Visit of Secretary Gale Norton, members of the Flight 93 National Memorial Federal Advisory Commission, and other dignitaries to the Flight 93 crash site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Norton swore in the members of the Commission, planning the permanent memorial honoring passengers and crew of the planehijacked on September 11, 2001

Soldiers with the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment White Currahee” were given the opportunity to represent the 3rd Brigade Combat Team and the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during the funeral service of Jim Pee Wee” Martin at the Dayton National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio September 21, 2022.Martin was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division, he fought on D-Day in Nazi occupied France; In addition to the invasion of Normandy, Martin also parachuted in Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, and the Battle of the Bulge.At the age of 101 Martin passed away peacefully in his home on September 11, 2022. He was one of the last remaining Airborne "Toccoa Originals" of 1942.

A scene of Equipment Park is shown Aug. 26, 2022, at Fort McCoy, Wis. Equipment Park is inside the installations historic Commemorative Area. The Equipment Park is an outdoor display of historic and present-day equipment representative of the types used on the installation. The design of the park allows for display of 70 pieces of equipment, ranging from helicopters and howitzers to trucks and trailers. The Commemorative Area also consists of five World War II-era buildings set aside to help tell Fort McCoys unique story. These facilities are representative of the types found in the cantonment area when it was constructed in 1942.

A morning scene before the opening of the 2022 Fort McCoy Armed Forces Day Open House is shown May 21, 2022, at Fort McCoy, Wis. Nearly 2,000 people participated in the open house. The days activities were centered on Fort McCoys Commemorative Area, which features the History Center; five World War II-era buildings filled with historical equipment and displays, the outdoor Equipment Park, and Veterans Memorial Plaza. Visitors also were treated to cooler temps and partly sunny skies. The event also had guided installation bus tours, a sandbag-filling station, personalized ID tags, camouflage face painting, military equipment displays, marksmanship galleries, and more.
