GREAT LAKES, Il. (Dec. 2, 2022) Morale, Welfare and Recreation hosted the annual Holiday Extravaganza at the Epicenter on Naval Station Great Lakes. Opened in 1911, NSGL is the Navys largest training installation and the home of the Navys only Boot Camp. Located on over 1600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, the installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. NSGL supports over 50 tenant commands and elements as well as over 20,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and DoD civilians who live and work on the installation.

During an exercise led by Arnold Engineering Development Complexs Inspector Generals Office and the Commanders Wing Inspection Team, Fire and Emergency Services personnel conduct reconnaissance of the site of a simulated fire and explosion July 12, 2022, at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee. In the exercise, a terrorist attack was simulated in which the truck had crashed and nearby an explosion had occurred causing a fire. The exercise tested the response by various organizations on base. Due to the heat index, personnel did not wear all the gear they would in a real-life situation.

Approximately 10 members of the Pennsylvania Canine Search and Rescue (PACSAR) trained on a variety of scenarios Dec. 3, 2022, in a remote part of Fort Indiantown Gap designed to resemble a village. PACSAR is a group of highly trained and certified volunteers that offers search and rescue services free of charge and provide additional resources to other search and rescue teams, local law enforcement, and fire companies in Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Fort Indiantown Gap is consistently among the busiest National Guard training centers in the nation, hosting civilian partner agencies and organizations in addition to active, reserve and foreign allied militaries.

The work was part of the units annual training. The additional lighting will increase visibility, safety, and security at the site. The 601st's efforts on the project saved the installation an estimated $20,000 in labor costs, officials said. Fort McCoy troop projects like this are coordinated through the Fort McCoy Directorate of Public Works.
