The Yorktown Campaign in 1781 brought an end to the military operations of the American Revolution (1775-1783). In August of 1781, a French fleet blockaded the Chesapeake Bay. By September, General George Washington, aided by French troops under Rochambeau, broke through the outer defenses of Yorktown, Virginia. On October 19, 1781, the British under the command of General Cornwallis surrendered, as pictured in this 1893 illustration.

He wears a helmet, chainmail suit of armour, tunic with fleurs de lys on blue, cuisses and greaves, shoes and spurs. He is armed with a shield (buckler), sword and dagger called a misericorde. His horse has a blue caparison.
