The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, commonly known as the LTTE or the Tamil Tigers, is a separatist organization formerly based in northern Sri Lanka. Founded in May 1976 by Velupillai Prabhakaran, it waged a violent secessionist campaign that sought to create Tamil Eelam, an independent state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. This campaign evolved into the Sri Lankan Civil War, which was one of the longest running armed conflicts in Asia until the LTTE was defeated by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in May 2009.

During World War II, Japanese forces invaded Thailand early on the morning of December 8, 1941 - shortly after the attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Heavy fighting broke out, as the Thai military resisted. However, the Prime Minister, Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, ordered a ceasefire at noon, and thereafter entered into an armistice that allowed Japan to use Thai military installations in their invasion of Malaya and Burma. On December 21, a formal military alliance with Japan was concluded. The Free Thai Movement was a Thai underground resistance movement against Imperial Japan during World War II. The movement was an important source of military intelligence for the Allies in the region. The Free Thai Movement is notable for being the only World War II resistance movement which used fighter aircraft of its own.

The Vietnam War POW/MIA issue concerned the fate of United States servicemen who were reported as missing in action (MIA) during the Vietnam War and associated theaters of operation in Southeast Asia. Following the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, 591 American prisoners of war (POWs) were returned during Operation Homecoming. The U.S. listed about 1,350 Americans as prisoners of war or missing in action and roughly 1,200 Americans reported killed in action and body not recovered. Many of these were airmen who were shot down over North Vietnam or Laos. Investigations of these incidents have involved determining whether the men involved survived their shoot down, and if not efforts to recover their remains. POW/MIA activists played a role in pushing the U.S. government to improve its efforts in resolving the fates of the missing. Progress in doing so was slow until the mid-1980s, when relations between the U.S. and Vietnam began to improve and more cooperative efforts were undertaken. Normal
