Cushman (nee Nancy Blymer) 1787-1830 Henry Williams American In choosing pastel for this portrait, Williams was following John Singleton Copley, who developed great skill in the medium before he left Boston for a career in England in 1774. Whereas Copley preferred a velvety surface of chalks, Williams applied distinct strokes of pastel on a carefully blended layer of pigment. Williams softened the tones of the face by stumping, a technique of smudging strokes using a tight roll of paper or a chamois tied with a string, or even the artists finger. He subsequently added several parallel, diagonal strokes of pink on Mrs. Cushmans brow and cheek. Having deftly manipulated the crayon to render the diaphanous fabric of the bodice, Williams also applied strokes of white along the ruffled neckline so that it would contrast with the smoothed surface beneath.. Marszałkiewicz, Stanisław (1789-1872), painterElizabeth Green (Mrs. Ebenezer Storer II) ca. 1767 John Singleton Copley American John Singleton Copley produced at least fifty-five pastel portraits before he left America for England in 1774, a rare achievement for a colonial painter in such a costly, rare, and painstaking medium. Among the clients willing to trust Copley with renderings other than in oil was the Storer family of Boston. In 1767, Copley drew portraits of Ebenezer and Mary Storer, their daughter, Mary (Mrs. Edward Green), and their son, Ebenezer Jr., and his wife, Elizabeth. All five portraits are now in the Museum.Copley took full advantage of the brilliance afforded by pastel crayons to re-create Ebenezer Storer's figured silk damask banyan, the soft pile of his velvet turban, and the stubble on his sideburns and cheeks. He had ordered a full array of the crayons from the great Swiss master Jean-étienne Liotard, but had never seen a work in the medium, making his accomplishment all the more astonishing.. Artist: Ralph Earl (American, Worcester County, Massachusetts 1751-1801 Bolton, Connecticut). Dimensions: 42 1/2 x 32 in. (108 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1789.The Connecticut portraits Earl painted after returning from a seven-year stay in England are his greatest works as they combined his natural talents with the lessons he had gleaned from English art of the period. He rendered most of this portrait of Esther Boardman (1762-1851) in deep shades of green and brown to highlight his sitter's striking face. Her alert gaze suggests intelligence, and her coiffure and wraparound dress, or levite, reveal her to be at the height of fashion, as was her brother, Elijah (whose portrait is also in the Museum's collection; 1979.395). The background shows the town of New Milford, which the Boardman family had been instrumental in settling. Dimensions: 50 x 40 in. (127 x 101.6 cm). Date: 1789.Mrs. Lewis Thomas Watson was an only daughter and an heiress. The painting is one of two versions; the other is presumed to be still in the family of her descendants. Even before the first was finished, the second was begun, ordered for or by the sitter's father. Reynolds charged his standard price of one hundred guineas for each, indicating that both were in great part if not entirely painted by him. The white muslin dress and black satin hat were the height of fashion. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.Portret Anny z Sapiehów ks. Date: 1876.In the mid-1870's, both Catharine and John Wolfe commissioned works from Cabanel, who had made his reputation as a painter of genre scenes and portraits of Second Empire aristocrats. He ordered a variant of Cabanel's most famous composition, The Birth of Venus (94.24.1), while she commissioned a Biblical figure painting and the present portrait. She sat for Cabanel in Paris, wearing a white satin evening dress that was the height of French fashion in 1876. Contemporary viewers admired the sitter's elegant hands and her stance as that of "a hostess receiving guests...full of flexibility and pliant, willowy grace, entirely American in its distinction and sensitive responsiveness."The portrait presided over the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Collection when it was first exhibited at the Museum in November 1887. Here Mrs. Joseph L. (Anna Watson) Stuart (1817-1881), wife of an Irish-born dry goods merchant turned banker, is seated in a lush landscape. She is dressed in fashionable ermine and laces, and on her right wrist she wears a cameo bracelet, created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This family heirloom, now in a private collection, is Saint-Gaudenss most ambitious extant cameo project, featuring six portraits— Mr. (1803-1874) and Mrs. Stuart and their four children Anna (1840-1902), Joseph Jr. (1843-1890), Margaret (1845-1932), and Robert Watson (1847-1920). Dated 18th CenturyMrs. Alexander Cumming, née Elizabeth Goldthwaite, later Mrs. John Bacon John Singleton Copley (American, 1738-1815). Mrs. Alexander Cumming, née Elizabeth Goldthwaite, later Mrs. John Bacon, 1770. Oil on canvas, 29 13/16 x 24 11/16 in. (75.7 x 62.7 cm). In these two paintings, Abigail Pickman and Elizabeth Goldthwaite sat for their marriage portraits. As was typical of upper-class white women in the colonial United States, they likely did not control how they were represented in these images, which were intended to project the familys stability and wealth. Before the American Revolution, the Boston painter John Singleton Copley was the most sought-after artist in the country. Copleys portraits, highly regarded for their skillful rendering of luxurious items such as silks and pearls, were synonymous with the tastes of the eighteenth-century social elite, both in the United States and England.
