Portrait of Johanna Juliana Frederica Bacciarelli nee Richter. unknown, pastellist, Bacciarelli, Marcello (1731-1818), painterMatilda Stoughton de Jaudenes 1794 Gilbert Stuart American The daughter of a New England merchant, Matilda Stoughton (1778-after 1822) was sixteen years old when Stuart painted this portrait celebrating her marriage in New York to the Spanish official Josef de Jáudenes (07.75). Seated before a loosely painted swath of drapery, she wears a fashionable silk dress and is adorned with pearls, diamonds, and a coronet-shaped headdress. An overt display of wealth, the work signals her newfound status as a Spanish aristocrat and departs from the restrained portrait style preferred by most American patrons of the era. The elaborate coat of arms and Spanish inscriptionincluding Stuart’s signaturewere added later by another hand, likely after the couple returned to Spain in 1796.. Matilda Stoughton de Jaudenes. This portrait, commissioned by marchese Ferdinando Panciatichi (1813-1897), scion of a distinguished Florentine family, depicts the patrons daughter or daughter-in-law. That it was one of a pair—the pendant is now unlocated—can be deduced from the original receipt for the exuberant gilt wood frame with silk velvet elements the painting still bears, a masterpiece of the intagliatore, or carver, Niccola Ricci (active 1848-1866). The frames opulence is evocative of the years 1864-71, during which Florence served as King Vittorio Emanuele IIs temporary capitol.. Home Luxuries, North and South Made thousands of miles apart, these two sets of paired objects reveal both similarities and differences between British American and Spanish American luxury goods. Both William Allen and Don José María Gómez de Cervantes y Altamirano de Velasco are depicted in relatively simple standing half-length portraits that belie the wealth and prominence of the two sitters. Allen was the great-grandson of one of Virginia Colonys most prestigious settlers. Don José María was the descendant of two old, distinguished Creole (American-born Spaniard) families in New Spain, in what would become Mexico. Betsey Beckwith, ca. 1817. Oil on canvas, 30 1/2 x 24 9/16 in. (77.4 x 62.4 cm). This portrait depicts one half of a prominent couple from Dutchess Country. Nathan Beckwith was a land surveyor and his wife was the sister of Mary Lyon, founder of Mount Holyoke, the first American women's college. Their social status as rural gentry is suggested by their dignified pasture and the attractive painted Federal-style chairs. Ammi Phillips was an itinerant painter who sought commissions in New York, western Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Apparently self-taught, he nevertheless modeled his images on the fashionable portrait conventions of the day. His style evolved from the simple forms and pastel colors of these early works to the large shapes and bold colors in the later portrait of Jeannette Woolley Storm.
