The Battle with the Sagittary and the Conference at Achilles' Tent (from Scenes from the Story of the Trojan War) ca. 1470-90 Probably produced through Jean or Pasquier Grenier This fragment is one of three in the Museum's collection that comes from two or more tapestries depicting scenes from the Trojan War. In the lower left portion of the tapestry, mounted Greek warriors are driven back to their tents by the terrifying figure of the Sagittary, a centaur (part man and part horse) whose powerful figure dominates the center of the scene and who fights on the side of the Trojans. Medieval accounts of the war introduced the idea of a truce after the fifth battle, during which Hector visited Achilles in his camp. It is this truce scene that occupies the lower right portion of the tapestry. A large banderole at the top containing quatrains in French and a small banderole at the bottom left with distichs in Latin describe the events depicted. A.D. 1812 Lutf-'Ali Shirazi This drawing of a Sasanian rock relief at Naqsh-i Rustam, Iran, depicts the investiture of Ardashir I (r. 224-241), who receives the ring of office from Ahura Mazda, the supreme Zoroastrian god. Both king and god are on horseback; the god wears a caftan, the prestigious riding costume of the Sasanian period, and his fan-bearer stands behind him. The horses trample the bodies of the last Parthian king, Ardavan, and the Zoroastrian evil spirit Ahriman. The drawing is one of several in the Metropolitan’s collection made by an Iranian artist Lutf 'Ali Khan (1797-1869) in 1860 (1998.6.1; 1998.6.2; 1998.6.4): they are comparable to renderings of Sasanian carved and rock monuments produced by early European travelers to Iran.. This extraordinarily complex mantle, or cloak, is one of the most renowned Andean textiles in the world. It was most likely used as a ceremonial object. The ninety figures decorating the border, created by needle knitting, have been interpreted as a microcosm of life on Perus South Coast two thousand years ago, with a particular focus on agriculture. Many of the images illustrate native flora and fauna as well as cultivated plants. Costumed figures may represent humans impersonating gods and acting as intermediaries between the real and supernatural worlds. Illustration depicting Chinese legend of the poppies. Lady Yee, was married to Hsiang Yu, a warrior with Herculean strength. When Hsiang led his troops into battle, Lady Yee chose to follow him and stood by his side in every battle. During a long and arduous war, Hsiang's army was surrounded and defeat is imminent. Lady Yee tried to boost his spirits by dancing with his sword. The petals of the poppy flower reflect her spirit as she dances in the wind with the sword. The Sampul tapestry is a woolen wall-hanging that was found in Sampul, near Khotan, in the Tarim Basin inside a 3rd-2nd century BCE mass grave. The tapestry depicts a soldier, probably Greek, and a Centaur. It is probably a Greek work from Central Asia (Greco-Bactria) and uses more than 24 threads of different colors in a typical western technique. The soldier wears a tunic with rosette motifs. His headband could be a diadem, the symbol of kingship in the Hellenistic world, as represented on Macedonian and other Greek coins. The presence of the Centaur as a motif, a typical element of Greek mythology, floral motifs, and the realistic rendering further reinforce the identification of the soldier as Greek. The tapestry was, curiously, fashioned into a pair of trousers, indicating that it may have been used as a decorative trophy. The existence of this tapestry tends to suggest that contacts between the Hellenistic kingdoms of Central Asia and the Tarim Basin, at the edge of the Chinese w

When the Mughal emperors conquered northern India, they brought with them a taste for Persian aesthetics. Early in their reign, the Mughals brought Persian artists from Iran to teach painting techniques and styles to artists in India. The product of this bicultural painting workshop looks very different from both Persian and indigenous Indian painting, in part because the artists were looking at European art as well. This is a folio from the oversized manuscript known as the Qissa-i Amir Hamza, or Hamza-Nama, one of the most ambitious projects completed by the imperial painting workshop under the Mughal emperor Akbar (reigned 1556-1605). Maharana Bhim Singh and Retinue Embark on a Hunt ca. 1805-10 Attributed to Chokha Indian Chokha was the son of the renowned painter Bagra, whose work is exhibited nearby. Both trained in the large atelier in the Mewar court at Udaipur and then worked as favored artists of the ruler of Devgarh, a feudal state of Mewar. The family style was continued at Devgarh by Chokhas son, Baijnath, who with his father evolved a distinctive approach characterized in part by a preference for deep shading, including nocturnal scenes and stylized, silhouetted portraits. It is unclear whether this equestrian portrait was made in Udaipur or in neighboring Devgarh during a recorded visit of the Mewari ruler Maharana Bhim Singh, depicted here with a golden nimbus. He is accompanied by an entourage that includes bearers with his hookah, fly whisk, and fan; a prized hunting dog wearing a golden coat; and a falconer.. Water Margin (known in Chinese as Shuihu Zhuan, sometimes abbreviated to Shuihu), also known as Suikoden in Japanese, as well as Outlaws of the Marsh, Tale of the Marshes, All Men Are Brothers, Men of the Marshes, or The Marshes of Mount Liang, is a 14th century novel and one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Attributed to Shi Nai'an and written in vernacular Chinese, the story, set in the Song Dynasty, tells of how a group of 108 outlaws gathered at Mount Liang (or Liangshan Marsh) to form a sizable army before they are eventually granted amnesty by the government and sent on campaigns to resist foreign invaders and suppress rebel forces. In 1827, Japanese publisher Kagaya Kichibei commissioned Utagawa Kuniyoshi to produce a series of woodblock prints illustrating the 108 heroes of the Suikoden. The 1827-1830 series, called '108 Heroes of the Water Margin' or 'Tsuzoku Suikoden goketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori', made Utagawa Kuniyoshi's famous.

Turkomen Horseman 16th century The figure of a Turkomen warrior, born to the saddle and inseparable from his mount, epitomizes the qualities of rugged independence, self reliance, toughness, endurance, and courage, admired down to this day, but to his more sedentary, urban contemporaries the additional, more fearsome and alarming qualities of ruthlessness, mercilessness, and cruelty. The leaf has been cut off at the top, suggesting that it once contained another or other drawings. The probability is, then, that this drawing functioned as a model, in spite of its finished appearance. The semi-circle at the upper left would appear to be half of an erased seal..
