Broadwood married Shudi's daughter and became a partner in the firm in 1770 and took it over after Shudi's death in 1773. As the harpsichord lost favor, Broadwood increasingly focused on building pianos, ceasing to build harpsichords altogether in 1793. Broadwood was credited, along with Robert Stodart, in helping Americus Backers create the English Grand Piano Action. In 1795, the firm was changed to John Broadwood & Sons, reflecting the increasing involvement of his three sons. This upright, cabinet piano has the date of ca. 1835, which is based on comparison with a similar piano of 1834 in the Russell Collection in Edinburgh. Thate date had been verified by Broadwood before the firm's records were destroyed in a fire.
