Alphonse Promayet (1822-1872) 1851 Gustave Courbet French Promayet, a violinist who was a childhood friend and schoolmate of Courbet's, appears in several paintings by the artist. Here, he holds his instrument while adopting a soulful expression befitting a struggling musician. George Moore (1852-1933). Artist: Édouard Manet (French, Paris 1832-1883 Paris). Dimensions: 21 3/4 x 13 7/8 in. (55.2 x 35.2 cm). Date: 1879.This pastel, executed in one sitting, depicts the Irish critic and novelist George Moore. He used it as the frontispiece for his book <i>Modern Painting</i> (1893), noting that as "a fresh-complexioned, fair-haired young man, the type most suitable to Manet's palette, the artist at once asked him to sit." Critics ridiculed this work when it was exhibited in 1880, calling it "Le Noyé repêché" (the drowned man fished out of the water). The picture is Manet's only completed portrait of Moore; one of his unfinished canvases, <i>George Moore at the Café</i> (55.193), is in the Museum's collection. Albert (René) Grenier (1858-1925) 1887 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec French Grenier and Lautrec were fellow students in the Paris atelier of academic history painter Fernand Cormon during the 1880s and became fast friends: Lautrec even lived briefly with Grenier and his mistress, Lili, an actress and model, and made several portrayals of the couple. An inscription on the verso of this portrait indicates that it was painted in Lautrecs Montmartre studio in the rue Caulaincourt in 1887. In this enigmatic painting, an unidentified man in modern bourgeois attire sits in a chair among cuts of meat. A platter bearing sausage and a bloody, freshly carved pigs trotter rests on the cloth-covered table, and what appears to be a rib roast sits on another platter (or is it an artists palette?) on the floor. Midway between these two plates of dead animal flesh are the mans clasped hands, which reinforce the melancholic mood of his partly shadowed face. Behind him hangs another cloth partially covering some indecipherable images (perhaps meat?) in a frame on the wall. It has been suggested that the scene depicts a butchers shop, a restaurant, or, more likely, an artist in his studio—a theme that Edgar Degas explored in numerous works.
