KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A closeup of Space Shuttle Discovery on Launch Pad 39A shows the White Room (left) extended to the side of the orbiter, at the entrance to the crew compartment. Discovery is undergoing final launch preparations of STS-92. Scheduled to lift off Oct. 5 at 9:38 p.m. EDT, Discovery will be making the 100th Space Shuttle mission launched from Kennedy Space Center. Discovery also will be making its 28th flight into space, more than any of the other orbiters to date. STS-92 is a mission to the International Space Station, carrying the Z1 truss, which is the first of 10 trusses on the Station, and the third Pressurized Mating Adapter

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - The Delta II interstage adapter, or ISA, for NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive mission, or SMAP, is lowered into place on the rocket's first stage in the mobile service tower at Space Launch Complex 2 on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.Processing of the United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket that will loft SMAP into orbit is underway at the pad. The ISA connects the Delta II first and second stages and encloses the second stage engine and thrust section. The spacecraft will provide global measurements of soil moisture and its freeze/thaw state. These measurements will be used to enhance understanding of processes that link the water, energy and carbon cycles, and to extend the capabilities of weather and climate prediction models. The data returned also will be used to quantify net carbon flux in boreal landscapes and to develop improved flood prediction and drought monitoring capabilities. Launch is scheduled for November 2014.

Reportage in the U1208 Lab at Inserm, which studies cognitive sciences and robot-human communication. The team works with two robots. A number of emotions can be reproduced with Reeti using an interface that is easy to use by medical staff. Research with Reeti is led by a child psychiatrist to encourage communication with autistic children. Children with autistic disorders concentrate more with a robot who can endlessly, and without getting bored, repeat attitudes that represent easily identifiable emotions. Reeti can also talk. This robot would be an ideal neuropsychiatric medium. Research will be presented at the CFP Congress in Lyon in December 2017.

This photograph is a view of a display, control console, and hand controller for the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) No. 2. The LRV was built to give Apollo astronauts a greater range of mobility during lunar exploration. It was an open-space and collapsible vehicle about 10 feet long with large mesh wheels, anterna, appendages, tool caddies, and camera. An LRV was used on each of the last three Apollo missions; Apollo 15, Apollo 16, and Apollo 17. It was built by the Boeing Company under the direction of the Marshall Space Flight Center.

iss052e002857 (6/18/2017) --- The Roll-Out Solar Array (ROSA) is a new type of solar panel that rolls open in space like a party favor and is more compact than current rigid panel designs. The ROSA investigation tests deployment and retraction, shape changes when the Earth blocks the sun, and other physical challenges to determine the arrays strength and durability. ROSA has the potential to replace solar arrays on future satellites, making them more compact and lighter weight. Satellite radio and television, weather forecasting, GPS and other services used on Earth would all benefit from high-performance solar arrays.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the new countdown clock at the spaceport's Press Site is being tested. The modern, multimedia display is similar to the screens seen at sporting venues. The new screen will be nearly 26 feet wide by 7 feet high, a foot taller than the original clock. The historic countdown clock was designed by Kennedy engineers and built by space center technicians before Apollo 12 in 1969. NASA has requested to acquire the countdown clock from the agencys Artifact Working Group at the agency's Headquarters for display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

In the Swarmathon competition at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, students were asked to develop computer code for the small robots, programming them to look for "resources" in the form of cubes with AprilTags, similar to barcodes. Teams developed search algorithms for innovative robots known as "Swarmies" to operate autonomously, communicating and interacting as a collective swarm similar to ants foraging for food. In the spaceport's second annual Swarmathon, 20 teams representing 22 minority serving universities and community colleges were invited to participate. Similar robots could help find resources when astronauts explore distant locations, such as the moon or Mars.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Workers at Launch Complex 17-B on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida check the large patch they will place on the Delta 2 rocket (behind them). The patch describes the Kepler spacecraft mission that will be launched by the rocket. The Kepler mission is specifically designed to survey our region of the Milky Way galaxy to discover hundreds of Earth-size and smaller planets in or near the habitable zone and determine how many of the billions of stars in our galaxy have such planets. Results from this mission will allow us to place our solar system within the continuum of planetary systems in the Galaxy.
