Morse was at the peak of his career when he portrayed Jonas Platt, who is presented as a soberly dressed man of affairs, with book and documents nearby, facing us in a confident yet thoughtful manner. The drapery and glimpse of sky are scaled-down elements drawn from grandmanner portraiture and signal Platt's prominence.The sitter and artist were both active in politics and concerned with the application of scientific and technological advances to national purpose. Platt had been an early promoter of the Erie Canal, and Morse was not only the finest portrait painter in New York, but an inventor as well. Monsieur Suisse 1861 Gustave Courbet French The Académie Suisse was an informal yet influential art school in Paris, which the young Courbet attended in the early 1840s. It was founded by Martin François Suisse (ca. 1781-1859) and, from 1858 on, was operated by his nephew Charles-Alexandre Suisse (1813-1871). When Courbet included this portrait in an 1867 exhibition, he identified the sitter only as Monsieur Suisse and dated it 1861. Date: 1837; carved ca. 1841-46.Before traveling to Italy in 1840, Clevenger executed a number of portrait busts, including one of United States senator Henry Clay (1777-1852), known as "the Great Compromiser" for his role in the 1820 Missouri Compromise. Clay sat for Clevenger in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1837. In this early portrait, Clevenger was influenced by the predominant taste for neoclassicism, for he ennobled Clay by portraying him in a toga, a device typically used to enhance a statesman's portrait. He also relied on an uncomplicated naturalism in capturing his sitter's likeness. Clay was so pleased by the result that he reportedly gave Clevenger "a certificate to the correctness of the likeness."
