Simon Bolivar (1783-1830). Venezuelan military and political figure, known as El Libertador (The Liberator). Sculptural group, in bronze and marble, that the Venezuelan consuls abroad dedicated to the memory of Bolivar on the occasion of the Centennial Celebration, July 24, 1883. Bolivar is shown carried on the shoulders of four allegorical statues, representing the Love of the Fatherland, Liberty, the emancipated South America and Slavery. The stone monument features two women walking up a small set of steps towards a doorway. One stands at the top, looking down at her companion and holding her hand to help her up the steps. Both women wear headscarves, and one of the women carries a small wreath. An angel sits on the steps looking forlorn, with his eyes cast down. A medallion above the doorway features a portrait of Catterina Ruga in Rossi surrounded by flower garlands in relief, and "FAMIGLIA ROSSI" is carved into the lintel of the doorway.
