The caption for this image by NC Wyeth that accompanies the tale of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe reads: ' And thus I every now and then took a little voyage upon the sea. Robinson Crusoe is a novel written by the English novelist Daniel Defoe and published in 1719. A fictional autobiography, it tells the tale of an English castaway named Robinson Crusoe (seen here reaping the stalks with bird companionat) who spent 28 years on a remote tropical island near Venezuela before he was rescued. Newell Convers Wyeth, known as N. C. Wyeth, was an American artist and illustrator. He was the pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators.

Autumn Study, View over Hanging Rock, Newport, R.I. Artist: John La Farge (American, New York 1835-1910 Providence, Rhode Island). Dimensions: 30 1/4 x 25 1/4 in. (76.8 x 64.1 cm). Date: 1868.La Farge often painted the scenery in and around Newport, Rhode Island, where he maintained a residence from 1859 to 1879. One of his favorite subjects was Bishop Berkeley's Rock, which terminates a ridge in Paradise Hills. This view of the rock appeared under its present title in 1884 at a sale of the contents of La Farge's studio. The artist's failure to show the painting earlier implies that he did not consider it finished; the rough brushwork and sketchy surface--in places, little more than a wash of thinned oil paint over the canvas--support that notion. The Outlook, Maine Coast 1894 United States. The Outlook, Maine Coast depicts two young women bracing themselves against the wind on a high overlook at Proutís Neck, Maine. Rather than focusing on what the women are watching, Homer chose to explore the act of looking. Homer, a keen and thoughtful observer himself, was fascinated with the experience of watching. In this watercolor, he associated visual observation with physical sensations the feeling of strong breezes, moisture in the air, and the chill of an overcast day. Because it allowed Homer to work outdoors quickly, watercolor was the perfect medium to make these atmospheric effects tangible and immediate. In The Outlook, Maine Coast, Homer was especially successful in creating the sense of moving air. The low vantage point also contributes to the emphasis on the windy sky of gray and pink clouds.. The Smugglers' Cove ca. 1880 Albert Pinkham Ryder American This shore scene, painted on gilded leather, may have been done as a decorative commission, presumably early in the artist's career. The romantic subject matter and interest in the sea are typical of Ryder throughout his career. What is more unusual for him is the very thin paint application and the decisive brushwork. Beneath the pigment is a layer of gilt that enhances the texture and gives the painting its warm golden tone.
