Édouard Vuillard spent the summer of 1909 in the French coastal town of Saint-Jacut de la Mer, known for its beaches and bathing. Sharing housing with a group of artist friends, Vuillard sketched and painted avidly, depicting the seascape in several works including this drawing. Here, the artist emphasized the remoteness of the beach, depicting a woman sitting alone, wearing a gray dress that matches the tone of the infinitely expanding sky beyond her.

Beside the Sea, 1869, Edgar Degas, French, 1834 - 1917, 9 3/8 x 12 3/8 in. (23.81 x 31.43 cm) (image), Pastel on paper, France, 19th century, In 1869, Degas made a series of pastel drawings near Houlgate, a small seaside resort town in Normandy. Though extremely spare in conception, many of the drawings include detail sufficient to determine the precise locations where Degas worked. In this regard, Beside the Sea is particularly challenging for it is apparently devoid of specifically identifiable landmarks. Instead of trees, rocks, and the other usual vocabulary of landscape, Degas offers a scattering of barely indicated beach walkers to suggest scale and perspective. Nearly reduced to a series of horizontal striations, the radical simplicity of the drawing anticipates the tonal compositions of artists such as Whistler, Buhot, and Pennell.

James Whistler (1834-1903) was an American Painter and etcher. His lawsuit against Ruskin was an example of his efforts to publicize his art. He was influenced by Velasquez and Japanese print artists. Among his best known paintings are Old Battersea Bridge, Portrait of My Mother, The Artist's Studio, and Portrait of Thomas Carlyle. This painting, titled Nocturne Blue and Silver, was painted about 1866 at Westminster, looking toward Lambeth. On the back of the picture is a card bearing the artist's signature and the butterfly, with the title 'Westminster, Blue and Silver, by J. M'Neill Whistler, 2 Lindsay House, Old Chelsea.'.

Stacks of Wheat (Sunset, Snow Effect) 1891 France. The monumental stacks that Claude Monet depicted in his series Stacks of Wheat rose fifteen to twenty feet and stood just outside the artistís farmhouse at Giverny. Through 1890 and 1891, he worked on this series both in the field, painting simultaneously at several easels, and in the studio, refining pictorial harmonies. In May 1891, Monet hung fifteen of these canvases next to each other in one small room in the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris. An unprecedented critical and financial success, the exhibition marked a breakthrough in Monetís career, as well as in the history of French art. In this view, and in nearly all of the autumn views in the series, the conical tops of the stacks break the horizon and push into the sky. But in most of the winter views, which constitute the core of the series, the stacks seem wrapped by bands of hill and field, as if bedded down for the season. Arques-la-Bataille 1885 John Henry Twachtman American Studying as an artist in Munich in the mid-1870s, Twachtman had painted with a dark palette and lively brushwork, both of which he abandoned when he moved to Paris to enroll at the Académie Julian in 1883. This painting is one of several large landscapes he created during his two years in France. Based on a preliminary oil study also in the Museum's collection (1991.130), it depicts a scene at Arques-la-Bataille, a town four miles southeast of Dieppe, in Normandy, where the Béthune and two other streams flow together to form the Arques River. Stowing Sail 1903 United States. Homer created sparkling watercolor sketches of sailboats in Bahamian waters during his 1898-99 Bahamas trip. When he visited Key West, Florida, in the winter of 1903-04, he further indulged his interest in the details of local boating. There, Homer painted Stowing Sail on December 22, 1903. Everything about this watercolor points toward rapid, plein-air execution.The artistís graphite underdrawing is a quick and sketchy series of lines that establish the major contours on the sheet. Pentiments, or shifts, in the underdrawing show that when he began the sketch, the figure was leaning further forward, gathering the sail over the back of the boat. This adjustment suggests that Homer was working quickly to keep up with the manís progress.Homer applied all of his washes directly within the forms marked in the underdrawing, working wet-on-wet, as if there were not enough time to wait for one to dry before adding the next.
